The Rizzi Process Over the years, through experimentation, James Rizzi has further refined and perfected the process of 3-D construction. We have outlined here, just how a typical Rizzi print gets made. It is a multi-step process that starts with an ink drawing on a large sheet of paper. He then hand colors the drawing. This color drawing and a color-coded black and white duplicate are sent to his printer who returns several proofs for refinement. The printer collaborates with Rizzi on exact specifications and finally prints two identical silkscreens for each final edition piece. Rizzi then cuts elements from one of the prints and affixes them with double-sided foam tape to its twin on the base print thus creating the 3-D construction. Painstaking care is given to the elevation of the cutouts. Ski slopes are steep, then flat (see Mountains of Fun) and buildings appear to leap out at the viewer. The results of the process are celebrations of life; Buy Your Gal Some Flowers, and cities; Drawing Attention. James Rizzi has a bunch of new ideas and he plays with new techniques, so you'll just have to come back to see what they are. Besides, we don't want to give away all of his trade secrets! |
